Preserving Paradise: The Guna Revolution and 100 Years of Autonomy

The 1925 Guna Uprising: Securing Autonomy, Culture, and a Pristine Land

This February 2025, the Guna people of Panama commemorate the centennial of the Guna Yala Revolution, also known as the Tule Revolution. This historic uprising in 1925 was a bold response to forced assimilation policies and cultural repression imposed by the Panamanian government. The revolution set the foundation for the official recognition of Guna rights and self-governance. In 1938, the San Blas Comarca, now known as Guna Yala, was formally established, granting the Guna significant control over their lands and affairs.  For the first time in the region’s history, a state formally recognized the rights of an Indigenous people and their territory.

Beyond securing autonomy, the revolution also safeguarded the region itself—protecting Guna Yala from the outside world and allowing its islands, reefs, and forests to remain largely untouched by modern exploitation. This preservation extends beyond the Guna, shaping how those who visit and operate within these waters engage with the ancestral land and its resilient people. Through sustainable practices and deep respect for local traditions, those of us who experience Guna Yala today play a role in supporting its unique balance between cultural heritage and environmental conservation.

Guna Yala stretches along approximately 200 kilometers of Panama’s Caribbean coast, encompassing a dense jungle strip and an archipelago of over 365 islands. It remains one of the few autonomous Indigenous territories in Latin America that has successfully preserved its cultural and political independence.

A True Paradise, Untouched by the Modern World

For the past century, the Guna have faced mounting challenges—yet their resilience and unity have safeguarded their traditions, identity, and autonomy.

Unlike other areas of Panama, such as the Pearl Islands—where large-scale tourism and development have erased Indigenous identity—Guna Yala remains largely untouched by modern influences. This isolation has preserved one of the most intact Indigenous societies in the Americas.

The Guna Revolution of 1925 not only secured their autonomy but also ensured the authentic preservation of their culture, shielding their lands from large-scale development and outside influences. As a result, Guna Yala has remained one of the last true pristine paradises—not just culturally, but environmentally. In San Blas, nature thrives undisturbed and ancestral traditions continue with minimal interference from the modern world.

While the world changes, the Guna preserve their culture, land, and autonomy—keeping San Blas a rare untouched sanctuary.

With over 365 idyllic islands scattered along Panama’s Caribbean coast, many still uninhabited, Guna Yala is one of the few places where true paradise can still be experienced. The Guna people continue to live in harmony with their surroundings, practicing centuries-old traditions, from intricate mola textiles to deep-rooted spiritual beliefs that connect them to the land and sea.

By contrast, Las Perlas islands lost their Indigenous heritage entirely. Once home to pre-Columbian civilizations, colonization led to the displacement of their original inhabitants. Today, these islands hold little trace of their indigenous past.

Celebrating 100 Years of the Guna Yala Revolution and Protecting Its Legacy

As we commemorate the centennial of the Guna Yala Revolution, it's essential to recognize the ongoing challenges the Guna indigenous face. The fight is not over—today, the Guna still contend with resource exploitation, overpopulation on their inhabited islands, rising sea levels due to climate change, and the constant threat of losing their rich culture.

Despite these challenges, the Guna people's unwavering resilience and deep commitment to their cultural heritage remain a powerful force. Their continuous efforts to preserve their land and traditions, while adapting to the modern world, stand as a beacon of hope and a testament to their enduring legacy.
